Artist Biography

Justin Bernhardt has been creating art since he was a child and grew up next door to artists on either side of his home in Kalamazoo Michigan. He earned a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999, concentrating on figure painting, drawing, and sculpting. He also studied painting at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina where he was awarded the Lang Art Scholarship in 1997. In 2001 he opened The Lovell Street Gallery in downtown Kalamazoo Michigan. There he exhibited his own work and the work of several other artists into the fall of 2005. He studied painting in the MFA program at Western Michigan University from 2005-2006. In 2006 he earned a Merit Scholarship to study painting at the Ox-Bow School of Fine Art in Saugatuck Michigan. From 2007-2008 he owned the Lucid Gallery on the downtown Kalamazoo mall. Bernhardt's work has been purchased for public and private collections throughout the world and exhibited in various Midwestern galleries and institutes. Since 2002, he has taught Figure Painting, Drawing, and Digital Painter at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. In 2013, he earned an MFA from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont focusing on painting, drawing, and digital artwork.
